NaNoWriMo Series: Writing Tip #5
Updated: May 20, 2024
Ah, the first draft. The bain of any writer's existence. There are many reasons to be afraid of a first draft, but the main one I notice in many writers is the fear of perfection. Let me just tell you right now, the first draft of anything you write is going to be trash. The hotter the dumpster fire, the better. If you try to make it anything less than a dumpster fire, you will drive yourself insane. Instead, I suggest that you embrace the power of Word Vomit in all of its messy glory. If you're unfamiliar with this, then learn more about this beautiful art here.
Here are some questions to ask yourself to help you get started:
Do I want to plan out my work or just go with the flow?
How long do I realistically want to be writing this story?
How long can I go writing without getting tired?
Should I set a timer before I start writing to promote continuous writing?
How many words do I type per minute (a.k.a my writing speed)?
