NaNoWriMo Series: Writing Tip #2
Updated: May 20, 2024
This one can be hard, especially for new writers. We all tend to get super excited about our initial ideas only to lose momentum halfway through. I notice that I tend to take my own work seriously when I pencil it into my life. If I tell myself that I'm going to write every week on Tuesdays at 4 p.m., then I'm more likely to show up instead of just sitting around for "inspiration to strike". I will tell you right now that inspiration will strike in the shower, on a rollercoaster, but never when you're "ready" to write. Might as well save the drama and start with one solid writing day a week. Then you can build it up from there as you get the hang of things. Here are some questions to ask yourself to help you get started:
How many hours do I have a day to write?
How many days a week do I have to write?
Where are some of my favorite places to write?
Where is the best place in my space where I can focus and write?
If you want to learn more NaNoWriMo tips, check out the 30 Days of Tips that will unfold this month. Can't wait? Then check out my mini-course on The Basics of Storytelling that's available for $1. I look forward to seeing you in whatever form I appear. Until next time.
