NaNoWriMo Series: Writing Tip #12
Updated: May 20, 2024
This is a lifelong discovery that only grows with time. I recently looked back at my very first works from 2009 and I couldn't help but laugh at how much my "voice" hasn't once changed. Sure, the grammar, spelling, delivery, and world-building have aged like fine wine, but the way that the words drip off my fingertips onto the keyboard always seems to land the same. If you look at all of my written works, you can see this quirkiness that most of my peers immediately recognize. It doesn't matter if it's a poem, blog post, play, script, or novel. Your unique voice will follow you throughout your entire career and only get better with time. Your unique voice is what makes you stand out in the field of Creative Writing. Embrace it with both arms and your full heart and you will be ahead of most of your peers.
Tap into your unique voice by asking yourself some of these questions:
What are some of my favorite things to write?
How do my characters always come off to the reader?
Do I have a certain character set that always comes up in my stories?
Are any of my characters based on aspects of me?
Are any of my characters based on aspects of the people around me?
